Outright Gifts
Cash Gifts: A cash gift (through a personal check or credit card) is the most popular type of charitable gift the Foundation receives, many of which are in response to annual solicitations. By contributing regularly through an annual gift, you demonstrate your continuing dedication to the The United Methodist Retirement Homes, Inc.
You may also pledge your cash
gift over a period of several years. Generally, a gift of this
type is paid over a three-year period. In such a case, a pledge
agreement is created establishing a convenient schedule of
payments and the use of your gift.
Securities: Transferring
securities to the Foundation(stocks, bonds, or mutual funds) that have been held
long term and that have appreciated in value allows you to receive a charitable
deduction for the full fair market value of the securities.
Giving securities that have appreciated in value also allows you
to avoid capital gains. Should you want to donate securities
that have lost value, sell them first and donate the cash so
that you can take the tax loss. As always, first check with your
porfessional advisors.
Real Estate:
Residential, agricultural, commercial or investment real estate
can be designated to benefit The United Methodist Retirement
Homes as a current gift. If the Homes is unable to use
the real estate for specific needs the Foundation will sell the asset.
Net sale proceeds will
benefit the programs you designate. Acceptance of real estate is
subject to the terms of the UMRH Gift Acceptance Policy.
In some cases a donor may want to give only a portion of an
asset's value. In such a case, the Foundation will purchase the
asset at a negotiated price. The difference between the fair
market value and the Foundation's purchase price is considered a
charitable deduction and capital gains are avoided on the gifted
portion.
Matching Gifts: Many corporations match their employees' outright charitable gifts with a contribution of equal or greater value. Completing your company's matching gift form and sending it with your gift to the Foundation may initiate a matching gift. Contact your human resources or personnel office to determine if your employer has a matching gift program and if your gift qualifies for a corporate match.
NOTE: Please confer with your attorney and tax advisor about the advisability of making a proposed gift. All gifts are tax deductible to the full extent as allowed by law.
